Here's a bit of my analysis:
"The Singing Butler" depicts several things about what it means to be human. First, the painting has a rich couple, being helped by a maid and a butler. This aspect of the painting is about class, and how all humans, no matter what, are limited (or promoted) by their class. The maid and butler are of a lower class then the rich couple, which you can see from their clothing and attitudes. They are there to take care of the couple, which is why they are holding umbrellas above them. Because the couple is of a much higher class then the maid and the butler, they are at a disadvantage in society and so have to take care of others. This says alot about what it means to be human, and how no matter who you are, there is always someone above and below you.

  1. Why do you think that is so? Why must there be a class system? Why have some cultures been judged better than others through out history?
